The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.  Approximately 5 percent of eligible girls nationally earn the award, which requires completion of a leadership project that is at least 80 hours in length.   Each girl must discover an issue in the community, connect with experts and community members, and take action to affect positive change.

Several girls in our local Girl Scout Community, Rolling Hills, have earned the Gold Scout Gold Award recently.

Elizabeth Wenger, 18, of Lititz, was honored by the leaders of the Rolling Hills Girl Scout Community for completion of the Girl Scout Gold Award.  Elizabeth achieved the award by creating an online directory of volunteer opportunities for teens.

For the Girl Scout Gold Award project, Elizabeth combined her desire to see more area teens involved in community service with her communication, research, and design abilities.  She secured approval for and led the compilation of a list of local organizations with volunteer opportunities for teens.  She researched the organizations, communicated with their leaders to gather specific details about volunteer opportunities, and created a website (gogiltzteen.org) to share descriptions and contact information for area organizations that welcome teen involvement.   The website is colorful, upbeat, and appealing to youth, making it a valuable resource for connecting teens with ways to serve the community.

Elizabeth has been a Girl Scout for 12 years and was an Ambassador Girl Scout in Troop 70248 in the Rolling Hills Community of the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania Council. She graduated from Warwick High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and National Business Honor Society.  She is an accomplished multi-sport athlete and attends Georgetown University in the fall to study International Business and play

collegiate-level soccer.

Amy Kochel, 18 , of Lititz, was honored by the leaders of the Rolling Hills Girl Scout Community for completion of the Girl Scout Gold Award.  Amy achieved the award by developing and organizing a program to raise awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.

For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Amy secured approval and initiated story and craft times at the Lititz Public Library and St Paul Child Care Center to teach young children about the environment and recycling. She also developed a vegetable garden at Luthercare and a butterfly garden with the St. Paul Garden Group at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lititz.

Amy graduated from Warwick High School, where she was involved in Cross Country, Track, UNITE, National Honor Society, German Honor Society, History Cluband Envirothon.   Amy was a Girl Scout for 12 years and was a member of Troop 70248 in the Rolling Hills Community of the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania Council.

Amy Wood, of Lititz, was honored by the leaders of the Rolling Hills Girl Scout Community for completion of the Girl Scout Gold Award.  Amy achieved the award by developing and organizing a program to benefit the residents at House of His Creation in Lititz.

For the Girl Scout Gold Award project, Amy combined her desire to assist young single women in need with her love of cooking.  She secured approval and led the building of an herb garden at the House of His Creation and taught a series of four cooking classes for the residents. The recipes were made with herbs that were grown in the garden. Amy tested each one before using it for a cooking class. She created a cooking and baking knowledge survey that the residents took before the cooking classes began and at the conclusion of the last class. She also researched and tested other recipes that used herbs grown in the garden and compiled a cookbook that included the herb recipes from the cooking classes.

Amy has been a Girl Scout for 12 years and was a an Ambassador Girl Scout in Troop 70248 in the Rolling Hills Community of the Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania Council.  She graduated from Warwick High School.

Kate Mobley, of Lititz, recently completed her Girl Scout
Gold Award by developing and organizing a summer program for middle school
students at Highland Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, PA.

"Vacation Bible Schools are typically available in the summer for children
in kindergarten through Grade 5, but not for the crucial middle school
ages', Kate said.  "I felt that a summer program that gives youth hands on
opportunities to try new activities and explore their talents would be a
great way to engage them."

Kate secured approval and initiated the program called "Shine On!"  She
recruited 15 adult workshop leaders to provide interactive classes on topics
like pottery, jewelry making, team games, photography, cake decorating,
African drumming, scrap booking, art, candy making, and more. Students
registered in advance and selected the workshops they wanted to attend for
the three-day program.  Participants and leaders loved Shine On! and the
program will be run again in August 2013.

Kate has been a Girl Scout for ten years and is a member of Troop Number
70248 in the Rolling Hills Service Unit of the Girl Scouts in the Heart of
Pennsylvania Service Unit.

She graduated from Warwick High School, where she was a member of
the National Honor Society, Business Honor Society, and Spanish Honor
Society.  She also plays soccer on a regular basis.
