Welcome All

WelcomeAll

To the website for Cub Scout Pack 647 (St Francis of Assisi/Oakville Mo)

We strive to build young men into the leaders of tomorrow through the core values and principles set forth by the Boy Scouts of America and

Scout Law

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly,

courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty,

brave, clean, and reverent.

We are glad you have chosen to take this journey with your son. Parent involvement is encouraged (and required at times). We can not do this without you and your child. In the end this is all about the BOYS.

Scouting is about teaching our boys to be part of the community. Scouting help them build leadership and team skills, and give them the confidence that as an individual or a group, they can accomplish everything. This is strengthened by our faith and by volunteers that want to see our boys succeed.

PineWood Derby Official Rules

Pinewood Derby

Pack 647

Official Class Rules

No theme for Cars… Driver’s choice!

Key Rules to Keep in Mind

o   Official Class cars must bebuilt new for this season and cannot have been raced in previous years

o  Thecar should be substantially built by the Cub Scout. Parental supervision andguidance in the construction of the car is encouraged, but the parent SHOULDNOT BUILD THE CAR FOR THE CUB SCOUT

o   Use an official BSA PinewoodDerby kit, not a Pine Car or other kit.

o   Car must weigh no more than 5.0ounces or 141.7 grams as weighed on the official scale

o Wheel treads must NOT be modified in any way

o All 4 wheels must touch the track.

o Once checked in a car may not beremoved from the paddock for inspection or modifications.

Dimensions and Weight

o   The total weight of the car maynot exceed 5 ounces (141.7 grams). Be careful about using scales at the storeor Post Office, as they are notoriously inaccurate. Most digital scales arefairly accurate, but only the official scale will be used for the officialweigh-in.

o   The maximum width of the car, including wheels, may not exceed 2-3/4 inches.

o    The minimum groundclearance from the bottom of the wheels to the bottom of the lowest part of thecar other than the wheels must be at least 3/8 of an inch, including weightsand accessories.

o    Minimum width betweenwheels is 1-3/4 inches.

o    The maximum height of thecar is 3-1/2 inches including accessories.

o    Other materials such aswood, plastic or metal may be added to the original block of wood from theofficial kit as long as the car is within the allowed dimensions. Cars can be hollowedout and weight inserted up to the 5oz. max.

o   Cars must be powered by gravityonly! This means no engines, rubber bands, wind up motors, springs as used forpropulsion, rocket motors, CO2 cartridges, thermo-nuclear reactors, plasmaboosters, rodents on hamster wheels, or any other thrust generation orenhancement devices.

o   Projectiles are not allowed. Nopart of the car may intentionally detach from the car during the race, comeinto contact with any other car, or extend outside the allowed dimensions atany time.

o    Movable or liquid weightsthat shift the center of gravity of the car when the car is tipped or rolledare in prohibited

o    Electronics are allowed aslong as they do not provide any propulsion. Examples of acceptable electronicsinclude LEDs, phototransistors, microprocessors, batteries, electromagneticcoils, transistors, relays, transmitters to cause lights or effects, etc.

Use Electronics to make your car look cool. However, you may not use the electronics to create any kind of propulsion orinertial force.

Wheels and Axles

o   The original wheel axles (nails)need not be placed in the original axle slots. There is no minimum or maximum wheelbase as long as no portion of thewheel extends past the front edge of the car. If placing the axles someplacebesides the original slots, keep in mind the minimum ground clearance of3/8.”  Maximum and minimum widths, aslisted above, will be enforced. Vehicles outside of these dimensions will notfit on the track and will NOT be allowed to compete.

o   Loose pieces that are designedto intentionally fall off during a race are not permitted.

o   If the front of the car isdesigned to gain an unfair advantage by shortening the distance between thestart pin and the finish line sensor, or the car design otherwise interfereswith a fair start, race officials reserve the right to require the racer tomodify the front of the car to eliminate the advantage, or the car will bedisqualified.

o   The axles of the car must befrom an official B.S.A. Pinewood Derby kit or an official Pinewood Derby wheelreplacement kit.

o   Axles must be firmly attached tothe car and may not pivot in the body.

o   Axles may be polished, but maynot be machined, reduced in diameter more than 1% of their original diameter,or plated or permanently coated with any finish. The heads on the axles may notbe modified or reduced except to remove flashing or to polish.

o   Reshaping, tapering, grooving,or otherwise modifying the axles will disqualify the car. No “PineCar” axleswill be accepted.

o   The use of a flexible or sprungsuspension system of any type is prohibited.

o   The wheels must be from theofficial B.S.A. Pinewood Derby kit or official Pinewood Derby wheel replacementkit. (12-spoke or 14- spoke wheels marked "OFFICIAL BSA MADE IN USA"are permitted), including official factory-colored plastic wheels. No “PineCar”wheels are allowed. Wheels made after January 2009 are preferred because of thesmooth tread that requires no sanding. It is acceptable to use wheels withmatching mold numbers from different sets of official Pinewood Derby wheelreplacement kits.

-Wheel treads may not be altered in any wayother than removal of defects and polishing. Injection molding defects onwheel treads may be removed by sanding VERY lightly. However, the wheels thathave been supplied in the official BSA kits since January 2009 DO NOT REQUIRESANDING AT ALL because the treads are molded without injection molding pinchannels. The wheels may be VERY LIGHTLY sanded, polished, or finished withgraphite to enhance smoothness, but they may not re-shaped or reformed orrounded off in any way. If excessive sanding or finishing, including latheturning is detected by the presence of turning marks or the slightestrounded-off corners or removal of the tiny bumps at the outside corner of thetread or any other alteration from the appearance of the stock official BSAwheels, the car will be disqualified, no ifs, ands or buts. This is the mostcommon cause of car disqualification, even when caused by a so-calledover-eager Scout who just wanted to sand the wheels and there is no intent toreshape the wheels. Please be warned: DO NOT RESHAPE THE TREAD OF THE WHEELS INANY WAY OR YOUR CAR WILL BE DISQUALIFIED REGARDLESS OF INTENT.Below are acceptable and unacceptable wheel profiles:

o   If commercial aftermarket wheelsor axles that have been professionally polished, rounded, grooved, lightened, lathed, machined, trimmed, or shaved are detected, the car will bedisqualified. You are expected to prepare the wheels and axles yourself.

o   The bore of the wheels may bereamed, coned, and polished, but not otherwise altered. This is not required onwheels made in or after January 2009 because the treads are very near perfectwhen they come out of the seamless mold.

o   No cars will be accepted intothe race where bearings, washers, spacers, or any materials other than drylubricant or paint are placed between the axle/body assembly and the wheel orare used as part of the wheel assembly.

o   Hubcaps or coverings thatconceal the axle end and/or contain a reservoir of lubricant are prohibited.

Lubrication

o   Only dry lubricant includinggraphite powder, Teflon powder, or others, may be used to lubricate wheels.Non-dry lubricants including those with a petroleum, solvent, or non-dry basemay attack the plastic wheels and keep them from turning freely, or can damageor contaminate the track, and are not permitted under any circumstances. Do notuse oil or grease as a lubricant.

o    Wheels and axles should belubricated if desired before being inspected and checked in. Race organizersmay or may not provide graphite powder lubricant at the race or at check-in orregistration dates.  Once the car ischecked in it cannot be lubricated again throughout the duration of theevent.

o   Lubricant reservoirs that arebuilt into the car are prohibited.

REMINDER:

Once checked in a car may not be removedfrom the paddock for inspection or modification !!
